California residents may be interested to learn that New York Gov. Mario Cuomo was recently alleged to have avoided paying certain portions of his child support and alimony to his ex-wife for quite some time. Reportedly, Gov. Cuomo had not made any child support or alimony payments for approximately two and one-half years.
According to newspaper reports, he resumed making payments, but he reportedly didn’t include court-ordered amounts for education and health care. When a newspaper attempted to contact the governor regarding the child support and alimony issues, Mr. Cuomo reportedly resolved the dispute immediately.
Following that, Cuomo and his ex-wife released a joint statement stating they had no dispute. The source reported that his ex-wife agreed to sign it since he had made the payments again as ordered. The paper believes he did so to avoid political repercussions and embarrassment. The couple share three daughters from their marriage and have been divorced for 10 years.
Child support is designed to make certain both parents make financial contributions towards raising their child. The amount is determined by the incomes of the parties, and it is supposed to help make certain the child will enjoy a similar standard of living as that they would have enjoyed if their parents hadn’t separated. Parents who are ordered to pay child support must pay it as ordered. If they don’t, they may be held in contempt of court and face punitive action.
