Uma Thurman's custody battle could be long and bitter

Uma Thurman has given celebrity gossip columnists in California and around the country plenty to write about in recent years. The 46-year-old actress called off her engagement to the businessman Arpad Busson in April 2014, and she is now involved in what analysts say is likely to be a prolonged and bitter court battle with the French financier over custody of the couple's 4-year-old daughter. A psychologist appointed by the court hearing the case indicated that an amicable resolution seems unlikely due to the animosity between Busson and Thurman.

The proceedings got underway in a Manhattan courtroom on Jan. 13, and the psychologist made her statement while being questioned by Busson's attorney. During the exchange, Busson's lawyer alleged that Thurman was a temperamental and unpredictable mother because she takes the antidepressant Wellbutrin and two sedatives. However, the psychologist asserted that both Thurman and Busson were caring parents who would be wise to put their differences aside and concentrate instead on what would be best for their daughter.

One of the issues separating the two parents is where their daughter should go to school. Thurman currently sends her to a private school in Brooklyn, but Busson criticized the exclusive facility by saying that its classrooms were too small and its students appeared disheveled. This prompted a brief moment of levity as both the psychologist and Thurman's attorney said that their children attended or had attended the school, and the judge announced that his child had failed to gain admittance.

Much has been written about the emotional toll that divorce can take on young children, and experienced family law attorneys may seek to avoid protracted child custody battles whenever possible. Judges base these decisions on the interests of the child, and attorneys could point this out and encourage parents to approach negotiations in the same way.
