Poor fathers still provide support for their children

California residents may often hear about fathers who fail to pay child support, as more mothers still raise children on their own than fathers. A study appearing in the Journal of Marriage suggests that "deadbeat dads" and fathers with a low income are not necessarily the same. It found that many poor fathers who do not live with their children still try to contribute to their children's lives even if they do not pay child support.

Public opinion about child support laws

California parents who have gone through a divorce may be aware of the disconnect between the way most people see child support laws and the reality of how these laws work. According to one study, the public largely believes the formulas that calculate child support are unfair. Likewise, the existing child support laws are not believed to be consistent with the average person's view of fairness. The researchers in the study found that many respondents believed that child support should be adjusted based on the mother's income, assuming she is the parent with custody. In some states, child support calculations are based on the noncustodial parent's income, while others look at the resources of both parents.

Divorce and Social Security

California residents may have read recent reports concerning a possible divorce between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. While celebrity gossip columnists were busying themselves with speculation about the possible causes of the split or details about the size of the Hollywood power couple's estate, family law attorneys pointed out the possible significance of the timing of the divorce. According to reports, Affleck and Garner will likely end their marriage around the time of their tenth wedding anniversary, but the date on which their divorce papers are filed could have a major impact on their future Social Security benefits.

Actress Kelly Rutherford's child custody dispute continues

A California judge who ruled on May 22 that the ex-husband of actress Kelly Rutherford, Daniel Giersch, had to return to the state with her children for a custody hearing on June 15 has been overruled by another judge. Rutherford and Giersch divorced in 2008 after two years of marriage. They shared child custody until 2012 when Giersch's visa expired. After that, a judge ruled that Giersch should have primary custody of the two children and that they could live with their father in France and Monaco.
