Beyoncé Knowles' father ordered to pay child support

California parents who are in the midst of child support court battles may be interested to learn that a family court judge ordered Mathew Knowles, father of famous singer Beyoncé, to pay almost $71,000 in back child support to the mother of his 5-year-old daughter. Knowles had argued that he should not be required to pay his former lover as he had paid her $225,000 prior to the child being born.

The child was conceived in 2009 when Knowles was still married to his now ex-wife. He allegedly gave the child's mother the money in part so that she would have an abortion. He stated that he was under the impression that she had indeed had the abortion until the child was born. However, the judge noted in the ruling that Knowles had sought to avoid his child support obligations by paying what was essentially hush money.

Knowles' wages will be garnished in order to obtain the owed child support. He was also ordered to pay about $1,500 in child support every month in addition to paying insurance for the child. He also was ordered to pay $50,000 towards the mother's legal fees.

Child support is usually paid by the non-custodial parent to help pay for living, medical and education expenses. If a parent refuses to pay the child support that is owed, a family law attorney may assist by taking the case to court. The attorney may show evidence that the parent has an obligation to pay child support but has been actively avoiding this obligation. Depending on the amount that is owed, the parent's wages may be garnished or other enforcement measures may be taken.
