Charlie Sheen seeks reduction in child support payments

California TV fans might have heard that actor Charlie Sheen has filed for a reduction of child support payments to ex-wife Denise Richards, claiming that his income has significantly declined. He also recently filed for a reduction in child support payments to former spouse Brooke Mueller.

Divorced fathers and child support

When parents of young children go through a divorce in California, the father is often asked to pay child support to the mother. Fathers who are in this position should be proactive about family law issues so that they can be in the best position to defend their parental rights. A father who has been served with legal documents covering child support and visitation issues should read the documents thoroughly so that they are understood.

Why parenting plans are important

For California parents who are divorcing and have young children, a parenting plan can keep things running smoothly for both the parents and the kids. Not only can it help give a sense of normalcy for the children, but it can also help parents get the emotional closure they need to move on and create happy, well-adjusted households.

Sherri Shepherd still legal mother of boy born to surrogate

Actress Sherri Shepherd, who many Californians remember as being former co-host of "The View", has been ordered to continue to pay child support for her son who is legally, but not biologically, her child. Her ex-husband was granted full custody of the child, but Shepherd had balked at paying child support and wanted to be taken off the child's birth certificate, which listed her as the mother. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has refused to overturn the decision of a lower Pennsylvania court and ordered Shepherd to continue paying child support until the boy is 13 years old.

Teenage children of Bill O'Reilly refuse to live with him

California family law courts will consider the best interests of the children when determining child custody arrangements. Courts in other states do as well, and a New York appellate court ruling in the bitter custody dispute between Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and his ex-wife has hinged upon the testimony of their children. Citing the statements of the children, an appeals court rejected O'Reilly's bid to gain residential custody of the boy and girl, ages 13 and 17.

California surrogacy case may change laws

A surrogate mother is challenging a California law that grants no rights to surrogate mothers. The 47-year-old woman gave birth to triplets prematurely on Feb. 22. She had been carrying them for a 50-year-old man who had paid for her to be a surrogate. The man had used eggs from an unknown donor that he fertilized. However, he decided that he was not prepared to raise a child and had asked her to have an abortion. The woman refused.
