Thinking of the children during a divorce

California residents who are going through a divorce may want to keep their children in mind as it moves along. Failing to shield them from the more painful aspects of the split could cause issues today and during adulthood. One way to resolve custody issues is to assume that each parent should have equal time with the children as a starting point for negotiations.

In the event that one parent isn't on board with that idea, it may be possible to avoid a court battle by opting for a collaborative divorce or divorce mediation instead. In some cases, it may be possible to ask the children what their preferences are if they are old enough to express them.

Even if the children aren't old enough to form an opinion on what they want, it is important to keep open those lanes of communication. Talking with the other parent may reduce the amount of time that it takes to settle a divorce and allow everyone to start adjusting to their new reality.

In a divorce, decisions may be made based on how a person feels as opposed to what may be in his or her best interest. Therefore, it may be a good idea for people whose marriages are coming to an end to meet with an attorney prior to starting the divorce process. This may make it easier to make informed choices for themselves and for their children. Ultimately, it may be possible for parents to maintain positive relationships with their children and each other.
