Child support and taxes

California parents who either receive or pay child support are often concerned about tax issues. This confusion is understandable since federal tax law differs considerably on the taxability of certain payments made by one former spouse to another after a divorce or separation. While alimony, also known as spousal support or spousal maintenance, is considered taxable income for the person who receives it, this is not true for child support.

Legal options for settling a dispute

California residents who are involved in a business or family dispute may know that the legal options available for resolving the issue include mediation, arbitration and trial. While all three options have some things in common, they each possess several advantages and disadvantages, too.

Preparing to file taxes after going through divorce

A California resident whose divorce has been formalized would begin to file as a single party with the tax return for that year. Being ready for that first tax return is important, making it wise to collect needed financial records even as the marital matters are being completed. It is important to be sure that one's Social Security number is separate from an ex-spouse's. It is also important to clarify matters relating to using deductions for children on income tax returns before a settlement is finalized.

A unique way of sharing child custody

The well-being of children is a huge concern when parents decide to dissolve a marriage, and it is possible to make a divorce easier on kids when both parents work together. California parents in may wish to learn about so-called bird's nest custody and whether it might work for their situation.

One Direction star agrees to pay child support for son

The rent is part of a child support agreement that was worked out for the care of Tomlinson's new baby boy, born on Jan. 22. The day after his baby was born, Tomlinson expressed his happiness about the birth on Twitter.
